The Love/Hate Relationship Between Media and Myself

When I think about media, what's the first thing I think of?
Without hesitation, it is without a doubt, all negative. I think of government schemes. I think of distorted views of self image. I think of corrupted youth.
But then I think harder and realize, wait... we're not really discussing something that serious, are we? Cell phones and facebook and what have you... it all seems so casual and prevalent in society. In a recent article online, I read that nearly 100% of Canadians own a cell phone. Seriously, think of 20, even 10 years ago when cell phones were nearly the size of your foot and could only receive and make calls. Now, think of all the changes! Calls are the least of anybody's worries when buying a phone. For example, what is the megapixel count on the camera in your phone? Is it also an mp3 player? Does it have internet included?
WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST APPRECIATE A PHONE FOR A PHONE? I don't quite understand it yet. It's the beginning of me feeling old, not understanding technology, and I'm only 18.
As is clearly shown, I disagree with most technology and it's useless passtime apps. However, I'm still guilty. It's nearly impossible to call someone nowadays without them saying, "I only have free texting, not calling, so don't call." Well, if I didn't have a cell phone, I'd basically be screwed, would I not?

  2. Okay, you'll see I deleted a comment I made earlier... sorry about that. I went back and re-read it, and I realized how poorly it was phrased.

Anyway, what I was trying to say was that you've made a really good point about cell phones here. If it's functional, who cares what else it does?
A point I thought you might find interesting, which I included in my own blog, is that people using cell phones pay for text messaging, however it costs the phone companies NOTHING to transmit those messages from phone to phone. We're paying them for something that doesn't cost them anything... it should, rightfully, be free! :S

  3. Hmmmm.....
Why does no one mention this as you sign your three year agreement with the cell phone company?
